Often considered essential for urban motorised transport, public space lighting is still often perceived as road traffic equipment intended to illuminate the road, without giving specific consideration to adjoining pedestrian routes. By making night-time travel safer, more pleasant and more attractive, lighting all components of the public space helps to extend daytime activities, or create new ones, and improve comfortable use of the public space at night, while respecting environmental considerations.
