Booklet #4 - How to temporarily close a street in a school area?
To deal with the day-to-day issues that arise around schools (traffic jams at specific times, uncontrolled parking by parents dropping off their children, feeling of insecurity for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, air and noise pollution, etc.), several solutions can be considered by cities, from the lightest one-shot event to the most substantial infrastructure works with changes to the traffic plan. Within this gradient, the temporary closure of a street can take place within different legal frameworks and be implemented using different technical & organisational options, among which the main are: signs only, stewarding + removable barriers, permanent swing gates, bollards and automatic controls. This booklet provides a quick overview, which can be
accompanied by more detailed bilateral mentoring support when needed.
